Chika Asamoto is Japan’s premiere female JAZZ sax player. While studying psychology at Cleamont College, California, U.S.A., in 1981, she had a chance to meet Art pepper (a well-known jazz saxophone player) and started to develop an interest in music. She transferred to Berklee College of Music in Boston, in1982, to learn saxophone and composition.
She returned to Japan after graduating from Berklee collage of music in 1984 and formed her own band . Not only her music style- which was fusing all sorts of musical elements of the 20th century such as Rock 'n Roll, jazz and DJing etc with her warm-tone and soulful soprano sax sound but her glamorous looks on the stage, wearing Diane von Fursteinberg gained great attention.
Her talent was discovered and introduced to her first signed record company, Nippon Colomuia, by famous actor, Ken Watanabe who was nominated nominated for the 2003 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. She made her debut as the first professional female saxophone player in Japan, by releasing a solo album, and she received a lot of attention from the media. She performed at the Jakarta International Jazz Festival, which had an audience of 20,000, in1991. She was prominently featured in most of the local media, such as the Jakarta Post and MTV.
