| The Yak | : | How would you describe the style of your work? |
| Hutomo Ishi | : | My painting is not just painting, because every time I do something, I use fabric, and other kinds of materials. Because I use collage, I call my style collage-painting, but I don't know whether this name is official or not. |

| The Yak | : | Were you interested in the visual arts from an early age? |
| Hutomo Ishi | : | In the beginning, I learned painting at high school in Tokyo - from a teacher who was an artist at the time. Then I continued studying painting for about five or six years, but then I stopped studying and also painting. Following that I started out as an actor in the Japanese theatre for six years, before getting into the field of fashion. I worked in the fields of fashion and industrial design. First, in fashion with Pierre Cardin, then with Alain Carre, who does industrial design. Painting then came back to me about ten years ago. |
