Interview with Artist Hutomo Ishii (part 3)
The Yak : Would you say that during your time in these fields, you were strongly influenced by any other particular artists or designers?
Hutomo Ishi:You, mean for painting? Well, as far the master painters, I guess I would say, Marc Chagall or Paul Klee, from an appreciation view-point. But, as far as contemporary artists, not really. But in the design field, I guess you could say I was definitely influenced by the design creativity and personality of Pierre Cardin.
The Yak :So, you started working with collage in '95?
Hutomo Ishi:Yes, something like that. In Japan, from the time when I was young, I was always interested in writing poetry. When I worked on design at home, I would also write poems. I also collected 'found' objects (broken pieces of glass, and non-useful things, just rubbish really) - I had a really big collection. Then I thought that I might publish my poems in a book, but I changed my mind as I decided that this was not so interesting. I eventually got the idea to mix my poems with the found materials on canvas. Since then I have moved away from the poems, and step by step, forgetting about the poems, I concentrate more on the painting. But that was the beginning, the essence of my art.
