Interview with Artist Hutomo Ishii (part 4)
The Yak : Would you say there is a central theme or method that you work with or return to with your painting?
Hutomo Ishi:You know, to start a painting, I need an idea. I make the smaller composition on paper first. Then I start on the canvas with something loose, often with natural things. But many times, I will completely change the idea and start over with a new layer... and another layer... many trials. Sometimes, two days later, I will change the whole canvas, rewash it with white or red, and start again. It is very difficult for me to stop, when I stop. It could be ninety percent finished, but then if I don't like it, I start over. Quite often I go somewhere, like the beach, as I find this very inspiring. Sometimes it's very energetic and inspiration comes quickly, other times it can take longer
The Yak :Your studio is here at the Ke*Mana Gallery?
Hutomo Ishi:No, it is up in Ubud.
